A Sacramento Electrician for Old Homes and New Ones
Sacramento has some of the oldest houses in the region and some of the newest. A bungalow in Land Park and a tract home in North Natomas need very different things from an electrician. Prime Electric is a family-owned, licensed contractor (CSLB #1061821) that works on both, and we start every job by figuring out what your particular house has behind the walls.
Wiring in Older Sacramento Homes
Neighborhoods like East Sacramento, Land Park, Curtis Park and Midtown are full of houses that were wired long before anyone owned a microwave. Many still have original circuits mixed in with newer ones. Knob and tube wiring still turns up in attics, along with ungrounded two-prong outlets and old splices made without a junction box.
None of that means you need to rewire the whole house tomorrow. It does mean someone should look. We’ll tell you what is safe to leave alone, what should be replaced soon, and what can wait for a remodel.
Signs the Old Wiring Needs Attention
- Lights dim when the fridge or AC kicks on
- Outlets that feel warm or have loose plugs
- A fuse box, or a panel with no labels at all
- Two-prong outlets in rooms where you run computers or TVs
- Breakers or fuses that blow on a regular basis

Replacing Outdated Panels
Some panel brands that went into Sacramento homes years ago, Zinsco and Federal Pacific Stab-Lok among them, have a poor record of breakers failing to trip. If you have one, we recommend replacing it. The same goes for old fuse boxes that can’t support modern appliances.
Sacramento homes are served by SMUD, so a panel replacement means coordinating a disconnect and reconnect with them. We set that up and pull the city permit. Read more on our electrical panel upgrade page, or see circuit breaker replacement if the panel is fine and one breaker is the problem.
Smoke Alarms and Basic Safety Updates
Older homes often have one or two battery smoke alarms, or none that work. When you sell, remodel or pull certain permits, code requires smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in specific locations. We install hardwired, interconnected alarms so one going off sets off the rest. Details are on our smoke detector installation page.
We can also add GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages and outdoor outlets, which is one of the cheapest safety upgrades you can make.
EV Chargers on SMUD
If you’re adding a home charger in Sacramento, the first step depends on the house. In an older one, the first question is whether the panel can carry it. In a newer one, it’s usually just a matter of running the circuit to the garage or driveway.
SMUD has its own rate plans and incentive programs for EV owners, and they change over time. Our EV charging station rebate page explains what to look for. For the install itself, see EV charger installation.
Natomas and Newer Neighborhoods
In Natomas and other newer parts of the city, the requests are different. People want recessed lighting, a ceiling fan where the builder left a plain light, more outlets on the patio, or a dedicated circuit for a freezer in the garage. These jobs are usually quick. See lighting installation and ceiling fan installation.
Downtown and Midtown Businesses
Restaurants, shops and offices in the central city often occupy old buildings with wiring that has been changed by many tenants. We handle tenant improvements, lighting retrofits, added circuits and repairs. Our commercial electrical contractors page has more.
When Something Stops Working
Dead outlets, a breaker that won’t reset, lights that flicker for no clear reason. We find the cause first, then quote the fix. Visit electrical troubleshooting and repair for the kinds of problems we see most.
